Pursuing God

Faith

I’ve been revisiting A.W. Tozer’s book “The Pursuit of God”, and once again, it’s stirring something deep inside me that words can barely touch. Every time I read it, I hear someone I can relate to because my heart longs to go deeper into a holy pursuit of the One who changed my heart.

The desire to go from knowing about Him to truly knowing Him.

The more I encounter the beauty, the kindness, and the mystery of God, the more I realize that knowing Him has not been a one-time moment, it’s been a lifelong journey of unfolding encounters. There’s always more to discover. More to be in awe of. More to surrender to.

It hasn’t been just about learning facts about God. It’s been about being drawn closer into His presence, where my heart can’t help but cry out for more.

In the book, A.W. Tozer captures that heart-cry so well. At the end of Chapter 1, he writes a prayer that feels like it was pulled from the depths of every soul that has ever truly tasted His goodness and longs for more. It resonates with a sacred ache to go deeper, to not just know about God, but to know Him.

And for me? Knowing that no matter how many times I fall short, how many messes I create, I can never let go of Him. He is the Faithful One who rescued me, and my heart hungers to know Him more.

“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, ‘Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.’ Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long, In Jesus’ name, amen.” Prayer from “The Pursuit of God,” by A.W. Tozer
